Safety & Travel Tips

 Q.

Is Tokyo safe for tourists?

 A.

Tokyo is considered one of the safest major cities in the world for tourists. Violent crime is extremely rare, and visitors can explore most neighborhoods comfortably. Clear public transportation, helpful locals, and well-lit streets make Tokyo a safe destination for international travelers.

 Q.

Is Tokyo safe at night?

 A.

Tokyo remains generally safe at night, especially in busy areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya. Late-night trains run frequently, and streets are well-lit. Visitors should avoid aggressive street touts and stay aware in entertainment districts, as in any large city.

Is Tokyo safe for solo female travelers?

 Q.

Yes, Tokyo is widely considered one of the safest cities in the world for solo female travelers. Japan has a very low crime rate, and women commonly use public transportation alone, even at night. As in any major city, staying aware of your surroundings is recommended, but overall Tokyo offers a safe and comfortable travel experience for women visiting alone.

 Q.

What safety tips should visitors know in Tokyo?

 A.

While Tokyo is very safe, visitors should stay aware in busy areas and avoid street touts. In Japan, cash is still widely used, and basic local etiquette—such as speaking quietly on public transportation—is appreciated. Japan is also prone to earthquakes, so knowing basic emergency procedures can provide extra peace of mind during your trip.

 Q.

What is a Government-Licensed Guide?

 A.

A Government Licensed Guide, also known as a nationally certified interpreter-guide, is a guide who has passed Japan’s official licensing examination.
Until 2018, this license was required for anyone who wished to work as a paid guide in Japan. However, due to the rapid increase in inbound tourism, this regulation was removed, and it is now possible for anyone to work as a guide without holding a license.

There are many wonderful guides, both with and without licenses, but the certification can serve as a valuable point of reference when making your decision.
